Namibia secrets safe from spies: official

　　WINDHOEK, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- With South Africa still reeling from the leak of classified state information by some intelligence organizations, Namibian authorities have assured the nation that the country's secrets are safe.

　　Al Jazeera this week reported that South Africa is being used as hub by international secret agencies and that its state secrets were being accessed.

　　CNN said the leaked documents detailed operational details of South Africa's State Security Agency (SSA).

　　An assessment carried out by South Africa's intelligence agency revealed that there are more than 140 foreign spies operating in that country, while security measures are poor.

　　Some of the leaked documents alleged that there was a plot to assassinate Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the African Union chairperson, days after she assumed the position in October 2012 in Ethiopia.

　　Namibian Police Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunga told the media Wednesday that the country has maintained the necessary precautionary security arrangements to deter any sort of infiltration.

　　"We have secured our security institutions with necessary resources and we would continue to improve on them," Ndeitunga is quoted saying.

　　The chairperson of the parliamentary committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security Paulus Kapia also told the media that Namibia's state secrets are safe.

　　He said the committee has worked hard to ensure that the country's security establishments are well resourced to prevent any threats.

　　"We are not saying we are 100 percent, but we are satisfied with the security measures," Kapia said.

　　Further, Kapia said the parliamentary committee conducts periodic visits to the training sites to check facilities used by the Namibia Central Intelligence Services together with the police and the army.

　　Some Namibians have questioned the huge budgetary allocation given to the secret agency, the army and the police as wasteful.

　　Kapia said the fact that South African sensitive documents were leaked should prove to those who are against the huge budgetary allocations to the secret agencies that it is not money wasted.

　　"People take for granted ministries such as Home Affairs, which is central to border control and immigration. Foreign Affairs is overlooked, while it is the eyes of the Namibian government," he said.
