TEHRAN, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The level of economic relations between Iran and the neighboring Iraq should be upgraded to the same pace with the expansion of bilateral political ties, Iran's First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri said on Monday.

"The economic relations of the two countries now stand at a proper level, and the volume of (trade) exchange between the two sides is (currently) about 12 billion U.S. dollars," Jahangiri was quoted as saying before leaving for Iraq.

The visit is aimed at further promoting Iran-Iraq economic ties, Jahangiri said, according to Tasnim news agency.

Iran is resolved to play a "pivotal role" in reconstruction of Iraq, he said, adding that Tehran is ready to provide Baghdad with its experiences in construction, science, technology and other fields.

During his three-day visit to Baghdad, the vice president will meet with Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Jahangiri will also attend a meeting of the Iran-Iraq High Joint Commission, sign several deals and meet with Iranian and Iraqi businessmen.

The visit comes nearly four months after Iraqi prime minister's visit to Tehran.

Iran has played an important role in Iraq's reconstruction after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The main areas of trade between the two countries cover the construction, food and industrial sectors.
