RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The president of South American football confederation CONMEBOL has resigned after being charged with corruption, according to media reports on Friday.

Juan Angel Napout was among 16 people indicted by the US justice department last week for allegedly accepting bribes to award media and marketing rights.

On Monday he agreed to be extradited to the US.

Brazil's Folha de S. Paulo newspaper said the 57-year-old Paraguayan tendered his resignation in writing to the Asuncion-based body.

He will replaced on an interim basis by Uruguay's Wilmar Valdez, the newspaper said.

Conmebol's executive committee is expected to announce a January election to decide Napout's successor.
