Former Kazakh PM sentenced to 10 years in prison for embezzlement

  ALMATY, Kazakhstan, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Former prime minister of Kazakhstan Serik Akhmetov on Friday was sentenced to ten years behind bars after being found guilty of crime charges including embezzlement.

  The court in Qaraghandy, or Karaganda, a city to the south of Astana, the national capital of Kazakhstan, also found him guilty of obstruction of business and other corruption-related charges, Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported.

  Akhmetov, 57 and a native of Karaganda, who served as prime minister of Kazakhstan from 2012 to 2014, denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty in court.
