MOSCOW, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- A deadly blaze at a psychiatric hospital in the Russian southwestern Voronezh region killed 23 patients and left dozens injured, the Russian Emergency situations Ministry said Sunday.
Over 70 people were inside the hospital when the fire broke out late Saturday night, and 51 of them were evacuated from the 700 square meters building. Among them, some 20 people with burns of various degree have been hospitalized, and the others currently stay at the other building of the hospital.
All the dead were bedridden patients or patients who took strong drugs.
The fire has been put out, but there is still no official announcement of what has caused the fire.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered his condolences to families of the victims and been briefed on the ongoing rescue operations and investigations launched by Russia's Investigation Committee into the accident
Prime Minister Dimitry Medvedev ordered the authorities to provide all necessary assistance to families of those killed or injured.
Voronezh regional governor Alexei Gordeyev has declared Dec. 14 a day of mourning for the tragedy.
