SAO PAULO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paulo are seeking talks with Diego Lugano with a view to sign the former Uruguay captain in the new year, the Brazilian club's coach said on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old is tied to Cerro Porteno until June 2017, having joined the Paraguayan outfit from Swedish side BK Hacken in July.

He is revered by Sao Paulo fans for helping the club win four trophies in 2005, including the FIFA Club World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the final.

"The first priority to is improve all three areas: the defence, the midfield and the attack," newly appointed Sao Paulo coach Edgardo Bauza told a press conference on Wednesday.

"We don't have specific names. We have to try not to make mistakes because we aren't going to be able to sign a lot of players. So the two or three that can be added need to be able to help a lot.

"Diego is playing at another club. I want to speak with everybody. I know what he means to his club and how important he could be. But I need to speak face-to-face [with him] so that he tells me that he wants to come back. We are going to speak to him and then make a decision."

According to local media reports, Lugano has a clause in his Cerro Porteno contract that allows him to join Sao Paulo should all parties agree to deal.

Lugano has been capped 95 times for Uruguay and captained the team at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. Enditem
